Design Culture

IED Barcelona is an education centre and an observatory of trends and research, and its main objective is to reflect and educate in the field of design in an interdisciplinary manner. To this end, the school has developed countless projects with professionals in the sector, students and companies from all over the world since its arrival to Barcelona in 2002.

Personalities such as the Nobel Peace Prize Muhammad Yunus, designers such as Richard Buchanan, Xavier Mariscal, Piero Lissoni, Giulia Mafai, Carsten Astheimer, Mario Eskenazi, the publicist Toni Segarra, the sociologist Derrick de Kerchove or the founder of LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® Robert Rasmussen, have performed different events at the school such as Design Business Conference, Barcelona Women Meeting or the presentation of the film Chico & Rita. Also, the school is permanently involved in recognized international events such as the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milano, the Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Étienne, the Milano Fashion Week, the Círculo de la Moda of Bogotá and also national events such as Bread & Butter, 080 Barcelona, The Brandery, ModaFad, Barcelona Shopping Night, etc.

The school has also edited several publications such as Five plus One Year Book and Ten Years Book, about the future and the present of design through a selection of projects developed at IED Barcelona and articles by the school’s director, Alessandro Manetti, the philosopher and scientific director of IED, Paco Jarauta, and Jürgen Salenbacher, brand strategist, lecturer and author.
