Illustrious Italian personalities ‘sneak’ into the Consulate
Through its innovation centre, IED Barcelona has been involved in the recently opened new headquarters of the Italian Consulate in Barcelona, with a graphic proposal for the interior of the building, that pays tribute to prominent personalities in Italian history. Thus, contemporary-style portraits of Federico Fellini, Sofia Loren, Dante Alighieri or Samantha Cristoforetti, among others, adorn the walls of this new 1000-square-meter space, all designed by IED alumni.
As well as 12 large-format illustrations applied directly to walls and glass, the graphic project includes the signage for the spaces. In addition, a completely innovative signage project for furniture, lighting and materials has been created, turning the new consulate into a showroom for the main Italian design brands and companies, including the IED.
The new headquarters, located centrally in Calle Aribau, near Avenida Diagonal, responds to a large extent to the exponential growth of the resident Italian population and is the result of collaboration between different agents: Alberto Formatger’s Imad architecture studio for distribution of the spaces and the technical part; Lagranja Studio for the interior part; IED teacher Michela Mezzavilla, responsible for lighting design; and IED Barcelona, overseeing the graphic elements.
The building combines design and functionality on a single floor and is conceived as “a point of reference for the management of administrative services, and also as a new space in the city to make visible, transmit and share the values of Made in Italy”, explained Consul General Gaia Danese.
