IED x CLEAR SKY: EDUCATING CHILDREN ABOUT RENEWABLE ENERGY
Supporting education on sustainability and specifically on renewable energy through play. This is the aim behind the special project “IED x CLEAR SKY”, which has lead to the development of innovative eco-friendly STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) toy kits. They were designed for collaborative learning through play in primary and secondary school classrooms, as well as for distance learning.
The project – which involves students, alumni and lecturers from the IED centres in Milan, Rome, Cagliari and Barcelona, and which also deals with the concept design for the packaging of educational content and the presentation of user instructions – is the brainchild of lecturer Pietro Riolo (Prm design & Mad House) in response to IED’s Creative Mobilisation for Italy. This is a call for proposals – launched by IED in the difficult spring of 2020 – to gather and support initiatives to benefit the community as it grapples with far-reaching social change.
Riolo has extensive experience in designing useful and sustainable educational products, as co-founder (together with Isa Medola, an IED alumna) of prm design, a design and innovation studio that offers consultancy and specialist services to international professionals, companies and brands.
At IED Barcelona, teachers Mery Glez and Aviv Shany are guiding the Undergraduate Degree students in Graphic and Product design to develop their ideas.
The final concepts of the new STEM toys – created within the project with the contribution of the four IED centres involved (schools of Design, Visual Arts and Communication) – will be presented in March 2021.
