IED Barcelona designs the equestrian obstacle ‘Castellers’ for CSIO Barcelona 2021

The horse-jumping obstacle Castellers by former IED Barcelona Product Design student Pietro Locatelli will form part of the course of CSIO Barcelona 2021, a benchmark equestrian event on the international scene.

Winner of the 6th edition of ‘Un Salt per a la Ciutat’ [A Jump for the City], a competition organised by Barcelona Equestrian Challenge, ‘Castellers’ is a proposal inspired by the colours and shapes of the long-standing Catalan tradition of the ‘castells’, or human towers.

The design consists of a wooden structure with a rigid base and support from which a row of cylinders emerge, paying homage to the people who form these human towers. Further, the colour palette used (purple, green, brown and yellow) alludes to the different ‘collas castelleras’, or casteller groups. The obstacle aims to reflect the four virtues that make up the motto of the ‘castellers’: strength, balance, courage and good sense.

The obstacle was built by the carpenters of the Real Club de Polo de Barcelona [Barcelona Royal Polo Club] and will be present on the course of the 109th edition of CSIO Barcelona, which will take place between 1 and 3 October within the club’s facilities.
