The fashion industry is calling for more and more professionals specialising in sportswear design, having grown to become so widespread that its use extends far beyond the fitness world. Seeing the need to address the industry’s new challenges, the Masters in Sportswear Design allows creators to specialise in everything from designing technical or activewear to the more sporty, urban concepts.
Students will learn all about the peculiarities of sportswear and activewear design, including ergonomics and design, specialised pattern-making, colour and texture trends, and textile innovation. The course will follow a theoretical and practical approach enhanced by exchanges with companies and professionals in the sector, equipping students with all of the tools they will need to dominate this field where fashion and sport merge harmoniously.
– To provide specific sector knowledge so that professionals who have qualified in fashion design, fashion and textile production or product design can further their studies in the field of sportswear.
– To develop content linked to designing, developing and producing sports clothing.
– To produce a sportswear/activewear collection based on the premise that every collection stems from a concept, an idea, a need, and evolves during the design process until the very best solution takes shape in the final product.
– To build solid foundations so as to approach the world of sports fashion with the right know- how, analytical skills, the ability to pick out technical fabrics, specialised pattern-making for sportswear, and good production means.
– To identify and understand each fabric’s technical properties, ensuring these professionals have the ability and sensitivity to convey new values and concepts to future clients.
– To learn about marketing and communication, market analysis and how to identify users and their needs.
The Masters in Sportswear combines specific theoretical knowledge of the sportswear and activewear sector with sound practical input, allowing students to apply what they learn in designing and producing specific sportswear items. The learning process includes a practical stage involving workshops, visits to businesses in the sector, work groups and masterclasses delivered by professionals, along with projects and work reviews. The student will gain hands-on atelier experience, following every stage of producing a sportswear item. This includes understanding the user’s needs, the technical requirements that those needs entail, the creative design process, selecting fabrics, pattern-making and the sector’s specific dressmaking techniques.
Students will learn about every stage of producing a sportswear item thanks to practical exercises and the support of sector professionals. An interdisciplinary model will be applied at each stage so students can interact, create and think up solutions according to the project’s specificities.
The ability to express their own sensitivity as designers is also a key factor in the course methodology. The Final Masters Project is designed to make students apply everything they learn throughout the course in an individual assignment. Each student will be expected to produce and present their own fashion collection, all the way from the concept to the final items.
Project presentations will be discussed and analysed as a group, so students learn how to present and share their ideas in public, and how to process constructive feedback. Each subject in the course is supervised by a member of the teaching team who takes care of providing professional expertise and constantly monitoring the students’ progress.
This masters course was conceived for designers with an undergraduate degree and experience in fashion or product design wishing to specialise in the field of sportswear and activewear.
It also intends to attract graduates and working professionals with experience in fields linked to producing clothing, pattern-making, textile techniques and engineering, production managers, and other related professionals with an artistic and creative eye who are interested in specialising in the sportswear industry.
Once students have completed the masters, their professional options will depend on their previous qualifications and experience, providing an added bonus to enrich and enhance their possibilities in the fashion field.
These postgraduate students will bring added value to a company working in the textile, fashion and especially sportswear design sector. They will be qualified to work as sportswear and activewear designers either in a fashion label’s design department or textile production company, or alternatively as freelance designers with their own projects.

Alfonso has a degree in Illustration from the College of Applied Arts of Llotja, as well as a degree in Fashion Design and Textiles and a masters in Footwear and Accessories from IED Barcelona. He designs sportswear, footwear and accessories.
For over 14 years, Alfonso has been working for international firms in the fashion design and sports product sector, where he provides a creative and versatile touch. His profound respect and passion for product design have led him to work on sport and casual footwear for Pirelli Pzero, McLaren F1 and Formula1.
Alfonso also designs sportswear and activewear for brands such as Best Kitesurf, Pachá Sport and Moov Athletics. He worked as the lead designer in the Desigual Sport department, producing technical sports and activewear, accessories and footwear. His main aims are applying new technology to products and a tireless quest for original, cutting-edge designs.
With a passion for what he does, Alfonso loves new challenges and sees design as a way of expressing himself and feeling fulfilled.
