Learn how to play an active role in the transformation of cities in a program where design thinking represents the backbone of a global, interdisciplinary and integrative vision of the citizen’s experience.

Today we face major challenges in urban environments, and we need professionals who can learn from the past, understand the present and anticipate the future to design solutions for these environments, in collaboration with the decision-makers and the people living there.

This master’s degree gives you the resources you need as a specialist to play a leading role in the process of urban transformation, a process of change that's essential for living in the modern age. Be part of the solution with your work, with urban designs that improve the social, cultural and economic fabric, and change the way we live in the 21st century.

The English-taught program focuses on the following areas: design for sustainable development, social inclusion empowering citizens to face social challenges, governance, cooperation, e-democracy, open data and transparency, design to solve urban mobility challenges and improve safety for people in the urban environment.

A master's degree in Barcelona on the experimental, collaborative, ethical and sustainable redesign of urban architecture.

Observation, analysis and experimentation are essential elements of this master's degree. It’s a full-immersion theory and practice-based learning experience in the urban context of the city of Barcelona. Both the theory-based classes and projects include trips to the city with your lecturers.

In the program you’ll be working in five interrelated areas that cover several types of subjects: Thinking, Doing, Designing, Listening and Communicating.

In the classes you’ll learn to use the latest modern thinking and production techniques to design the urban spaces of the future.

You’ll be working on demanding projects in which you can put your ideas and newfound knowledge to good use in constantly evolving urban scenarios.

The Master’s Degree in Design for the Urban Environment is for professionals and people who have recently graduated, interested in continuing their studies to acquire specific skills in strategic urban design; students who want to work in urban design.

It’s an English-taught Master´s degree for people who want to work on multidisciplinary design projects. Professionals with interdisciplinary experience such as product designers, architects, visual communication, marketing and interior design specialists among others, can add another feather to their cap with the know-how and skills they need to develop new urban areas.

Professionals who want to see how design plays a vital role in social innovation and public policy will find the program both interesting and useful.

In this program you’ll acquire the tools you need to analyse and understand the physical, social, political and economic factors that influence the growth of cities, and learn how to interpret the needs of the population to create urban design projects for the future.

You’ll take a humanistic approach to applied design thinking, picking up the gauntlet to meet major challenges such as sustainability, inclusion and co-creation.

 

Last but not least, you’ll be studying urban design in Barcelona, a constantly evolving urban environment, a city looking for effective solutions to major challenges.

They will be able to work in public/private entities in some of the following areas/functions:

  • Lead urban regeneration processes
  • Urban design consultancy
  • Urban design process management
  • Conduct studies related to the urban environment
  • Prepare guidance and statements
  • Site and area design and/or mobility design
  • Facilitate collaborative processes for design in the urban environment
  • Visualise and communicate data in urban design processes

What will you learn?

Throughout the course you’ll be using the most effective tools to design urban environments. You’ll acquire the critical capacity needed to analyse the morphology of modern cities, and an intimate understanding of the physical, social and political factors involved.
